Driver's license exchange: obligation to surrender and deadlines
In Germany, all driving licenses issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged for a new EU driving license. The obligation to exchange is staggered according to year of birth:
- Year of birth 1953 to 1958: Exchange until January 19, 2023
- Year of birth 1959 to 1964: Exchange until January 18, 2024
- Year of birth 1965 to 1970: Exchange until January 17, 2025
- Year of birth 1971 and later: Exchange until January 19, 2026
Motorcycle license: A, A1 and A2
The motorcycle license is divided into three classes:
- A: Unlimited motorcycle use (from 24 years, or 20 years with A2 license for at least 2 years)
- A1: Light motorcycles up to 125 cm³ and 11 kW (from 16 years)
- A2: Motorcycles up to 35 kW (from 18 years)

The cost of a driving license varies depending on the federal state and driving school. On average, the costs for:
- Car driver's license (class B): 1.500 – 2.000 €
- Motorcycle license (class A): 1.800 – 2.500 €
- Truck driver's license (class C): 2.000 – 3.000 €
MPU: costs and preparation
The medical-psychological examination (MPU) can be ordered in the case of driving license revocation or alcohol and drug driving. The costs for an MPU are approx. 500 - 800 €.
